Over the Summer I (Katy Truss) took on writing a review feature for BBC Good Food to find the best toy kitchens. As a child, my favourite toy ever was my A La Carte Kitchen, I would spend hours with play food, shaping fruitella sweets into food shapes or sneaking yorkshire puddings and slices of meat from my parents' restaurant kitchens. I thought it would be brilliant fun letting the kids test them out and to see how far play kitchens had come since the eighties!
As the flat packed kitchens started arriving I knew I had to rope in some help... I am so grateful to my Dad, Jamie, Steve and John for helping get them assembled! I could never have done it myself. If you end up buying a play kitchen, remember some of them take hours to assembled with skilled flat pack furniture builders!
Lottie and Alfie (my kids) had great fun with the kitchens, but I needed more mini testers and thoughts from other parents, so invited some of their friends round for a play session with the kitchens. I bought in some mini pancakes, syrup, mini marshmallows and fruit for them to chop up at their kitchens; they had a great time! Chicken nuggets and chips for the play date win!
If you're keen to find out which were the best play kitchens we found, take a read of the review over at bbcgoodfood.com here. There's a handy buyers guide at the end, so if you don't like the look of those featured, the guide will help you decide on the right one for you.
